How Much Experience Does Your Real Estate Agent Have in the Industry?

Rhonda Duffy

When it is time to buy or sell a home, it is essential that you are working with a real estate agent who is experienced in the industry. But, you will need to ask a few questions to learn more about their experience, because agents often have different definitions of “experience.” By talking with them about the transactions that have been completed, you can learn more about their background to determine if they are a good fit for what you need.

Years of Experience vs. Transactions

If you are talking with a real estate agent who has many years in industry, keep in mind that the number of years isn’t as important as current experience and the number of transactions that have been completed. So, ask about when they got their real estate license as well as the number of homes that have been bought and sold during that time.

Even if someone has had their real estate license for 15 years, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they have the experience that is needed for your home! It’s a possibility that they got their license, but then they’ve put in minimal effort over the years to keep up with the trends in the industry. Just because someone has a real estate license, doesn’t mean that they know the current best practices.

In fact, there are situations where people get their real estate license on the side, while working a full-time job in another industry. Then, they will buy or sell a home once or twice a year for a little bit of extra spending money. In this situation, the real estate agent is more of a hobbyist than an expert.

Hire a Real Estate Agent Who is “In the Trenches”

The best thing that you can do to ensure a positive outcome with your real estate transaction is to hire someone who is focused and works in the industry every day. Talk with your agent about the number of transactions that they have handled, because the real-world experience comes each time a closing occurs.

So, someone who handles hundreds (or even thousands!) of transactions every year will have exponentially more experience compared with someone who handles 10 or 20 transactions per year. Each time the real estate agent is involved in a transaction, they are able to use their knowledge, improve their systems, and practice their negotiation skills. This real world experience is very valuable to help with your own situation.
