Family Traditions: Planning Activities to Create Lasting Memories

Rhonda Duffy

One of the most important things that you can do for your family is to create lasting memories that will build the relationships that you cherish. As your children grow up, they will remember the time that was spent doing some of the fun activities that you enjoyed together.

If you want to create the right family culture, then you need to be proactive with your family traditions. These traditions can be built around holidays or certain times of the year. When it comes to traditions, there are no right or wrong answers. The best thing that you can do is find the activities that will create the family memories that you want to cultivate.

Holiday Traditions

Holidays offer the most obvious time when you can plan fun traditions with your family. But, you don’t have to wait until Thanksgiving or Christmas to share these traditions. Look for traditions that can be incorporated into holidays throughout the year. For example, take your kids to a special Valentine’s Day dinner for “family date night.” Or, plan a fun breakfast of green eggs and ham to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Don’t forget to buy the patriotic t-shirts when you head out to the 4th of July parade and carnival!

School Year Traditions

The school year offers another option to build family memories together. Consider traditions around the first and last day of school or other breaks during the year. Some families like to host a back-to-school BBQ for all of the children and parents in the neighborhood. Or, you could plan a family feast to celebrate the end of a successful school year.

Daily, Weekly, and Monthly Traditions

Also, it is important to think about the small daily, weekly, and monthly activities and traditions that shape your family culture. These traditions can be simple things that are unique to your family. Consider planning family movie night every Friday, or taking everyone out for brunch on Sundays. Do you have a tradition to share a glass of milk and cookies with your kids after they walk in the door after school? These activities seem small, but they can really add up to help you create the family culture that you desire.

Choose the Right Home to Support Your Family Traditions

When you are in the market to buy a new home, you need to consider how the property will support your family traditions. If you like to hang the Christmas stockings by the fireplace, then you need to be sure that you have a mantle to use! Or, consider the quality of the backyard and how you will be able to host family and friends when it is time for your back-to-school BBQ.
