5 Steps to Declutter the Closets Before Selling Your Home

Rhonda Duffy

When a potential buyer is walking through your home, it can be a shock to open the closet door and find a mess inside. Many parents find it hard to stay ahead of the clutter when kids are in the house, but it is important that you are proactive to reduce clutter if you are preparing to sell.

Clutter in the home makes the storage space feel cramped and small. By decreasing the “stuff” in your home, you can open up these spaces and make the property look spacious and inviting.

Where should you start if you want to get rid of clutter in your home? Here are a few tips to help you get started:

1. Start Small

There is no need to sort through every room in your house on the same day! Instead, start with a few things at a time so that you don’t feel overwhelmed by the task. If a whole closet is too intimidating, then begin by working on a single shelf. Continue working through the storage areas until you have moved through the entire home.

2. Get Rid of Clothing that Doesn’t Fit

If you have clothes that don’t fit, then it doesn’t make sense to hold onto those items. Some people keep old clothes with the intention of losing weight so that they can wear them again. But, it only causes clutter to pile up. Instead, donate those clothes to someone else who can use them. Then, you have the opportunity to freshen your wardrobe when your weight changes in the future.

3. Setup Zones to Move Items Out of the House

Create an area where you can put things that need to leave the house. Designate a pile for donations, a pile of items that need to be sold, and a pile of things that need to be taken to the dumpster. These designated areas will make it easier to move things when you are ready to clear everything out of the house.

4. Ask the Right Questions

Do you hold onto items with good intentions that you will use those things again in the future? Many people find that they are holding onto things that are never used. Look at each item and consider the last time every piece was used. If it has been a few years since you used those things, then it is time to get rid of them.

5. Rent a Storage Space

If you have too many things that you can’t get rid of, then consider the benefit of renting a storage space for a while. Moving the items out of your house can help you prepare to sell the property. Then, you can bring those storage items to your new home when it is time to move.
